A B O U T   O U R   C L A S S E S

A M E R I C A N  S I G N  L A N G U A G E  I

S E P T E M B E R  -  M A Y

ASL I will cover ASL basics, conversational ASL, ASL history and culture. The basics will include, using and reading fingerspelling, signing strategies, building ASL vocabulary as well as putting it all into practice through conversation and games. Students will come out of the class with the knowledge and ability to introduce themselves and have a basic conversation in ASL. While covering ASL history and deaf culture, students will not only have the physical capability to sign but knowledge and respect for the Deaf Community as well. It is essential that students practice each week's lesson and vocab everyday. High school students can receive a foreign language credit.

  • American Sign Language I will meet on Tuesdays from 4:30 - 6:00

  • This class is a full school year class.
    1st semester is September - 
    December
    2nd semester is January - May

C R E D I T  E A R N E D

  • You will receive one (1)  full Foreign Language credit of American Sign Language I (ASL I)
  • You must complete both semesters to receive the full Foreign Language credit. 
 Our program is built to serve 7th through 12th grade students.

R E Q U I R E D  M A T E R I A L S

Resource Fee is $20/student
  • Students will need access to one of the following: desktop/laptop/tablet/ipad/iphone etc so they can write essays and video projects.
  • Students will need access to our Slack App (through either a computer or phone)
  • Students will need pencils (pens are optional)
  • Students will need notebook paper
  • Students will need highlighters
  • Students will need a 2 inch binder
  • Each student is REQUIRED to bring one (1) ream of paper
  • Each student is REQUIRED to bring one (1) roll of paper towels
All written materials and coursework will be provided by ETD

ASL 2 will have much more intensive homework and class time. We will go more in depth on ASL grammar, structure, vocab and culture. There will be a lot of one on one and group exercises between students to practice their skills. There will be games catered to learning and practicing ASL. There will be several projects throughout the year, both individual and group. It is essential that students practice each week's lesson and vocab everyday. High school students can receive a foreign language credit.

S C H O L A R S H I P S

We desire to be inclusive and offer our program to students who care deeply about the mission of ETD. In order to make sure our doors are open to students with various situations, we will be offering scholarship opportunities!

The American Sign Language program is offering two scholarships this year. One is for a student is in in financial need an dis passionate about ASL. The other is for a student who is Deaf, Hard-of-hearing, or is related to someone who is Deaf/Hard-of-hearing and has never been provided the opportunity to learn ASL

Requirements for Needs-based:
-Student must meet all program eligibility requirements
- Student must be financially restricted from participation in the program (could not otherwise enroll without financial assistance)
- Student must write one paragraph (5 sentences or more) about why they desire to participate)
Requirements for Deaf/Hard-of-hearing:
-Student must meet all program eligibility requirements
- Student must be Deaf, Hard-of-hearing, or related to someone who is Deaf/Hard-of-hearing
- Student must write one paragraph (5 sentences or more) about why they desire to participate)
